What this glossary is for

This town runs on shorthand. A rental listing says bayside, and it expects you to know what that costs you in walking distance. A lifeguard says shore break, a neighbour says take Route 90, and a menu says market price. None of it is difficult, and all of it assumes you already know. The gap between knowing and not knowing turns into a wasted afternoon, or a harder conversation at the water line.

Each term below gets a one- or two-sentence definition here. Its own page answers the question directly in the opening paragraph, then adds the context, the tradeoffs, and the decisions that follow from knowing it, which is usually where the useful part of a definition actually lives. Where a term shapes a plan, that page links to the guide handling it in depth. You won't need all fifty.

Places and districts

What locals call each part of a ten-mile barrier island. The names decide where you stay and how far you walk.

Ocean City BoardwalkThe wooden oceanfront promenade running from the Inlet north to 27th Street, lined with amusement piers, arcades, food stands, and beach access.Ocean City InletThe channel at the southern tip of Ocean City that connects the Atlantic to the back bays and separates the town from Assateague Island.Downtown Ocean CityThe oldest, densest part of town at the southern end of the island, roughly from the Inlet north to the low thirties.Midtown Ocean CityThe middle stretch of the island, roughly from the low thirties to around 90th Street, where the Boardwalk ends and the beach stays wide.Uptown Ocean CityThe northern end of the island, roughly from 90th Street to the Delaware line at 146th Street, known for wide beaches, Northside Park, and quieter evenings.West Ocean CityThe unincorporated mainland area just across the Route 50 bridge, home to the commercial harbor, outlets, big-box shopping, and the Park and Ride.Isle of Wight BayThe sheltered water between Ocean City and the mainland, used for paddling, watersports, sunset cruises, and bayside dining.Coastal HighwayMaryland Route 528, the main road running the length of the island, carrying the bus line and nearly all north-south traffic.Assateague IslandThe protected barrier island south of the Inlet, reached by car through West Ocean City, known for wild horses, undeveloped beach, and park rules.Bayside and oceansideThe local shorthand for which side of Coastal Highway an address sits on: oceanside is east toward the Atlantic, bayside is west toward the bay.

Beach and water

Surf, safety, and shoreline words that decide where a group swims, fishes, or stays out of the water.

Ocean City Beach PatrolThe town agency whose surf rescue technicians guard the Atlantic beach during posted seasonal hours and set the safety rules swimmers are expected to follow.Guarded beachA stretch of sand with an on-duty lifeguard stand and posted swimming boundaries, which is the only water most visitors should enter.Rip currentA narrow channel of water flowing away from shore that carries swimmers out fast; escape by swimming parallel to the beach, not against the pull.Shore breakWaves that break directly on the sand rather than offshore, a common cause of neck, shoulder, and spine injuries in shallow water.SandbarAn underwater ridge of sand parallel to the beach where waves break; the deeper trough between bars is where rip currents form.Beach flag warningsColored flags and posted signs that communicate current water conditions and swimming restrictions on a guarded beach.Dune crossingThe marked walkway over a protected dune; walking on the dune itself is prohibited because the vegetation holds the storm barrier together.Surf fishingFishing from the beach into the breaking surf, subject to licensing rules and restrictions on where and when you can cast near swimmers.Tide chartA published table of daily high and low tide times used to plan beach width, fishing, paddling, and how much sand you will actually have.Surf reportA daily read on wave height, period, wind direction, and water temperature, used by surfers and by anyone deciding whether the ocean suits their group.

Parking, transit, addresses: the terms that decide how much of the day you spend moving.
