What is West Ocean City?
West Ocean City is the unincorporated mainland community immediately west of the Route 50 bridge, in Worcester County rather than the Town of Ocean City. It holds the commercial fishing harbor and the charter fleets. Outlet and grocery shopping, the Park and Ride lot, plus the road south toward Assateague all sit out here too. Visitors use it for provisioning, parking, boat trips, and off-island dining, and rental listings there mean a drive to the beach rather than a walk.

Different town, different rules
The line matters. Because West Ocean City sits outside municipal limits, some regulations, services, and even tax treatment differ from the island. That distinction rarely affects a beach day, but it matters for anything jurisdiction-specific, and it explains why some listings advertise an Ocean City address that is a fifteen-minute drive from the sand.
What visitors actually come here for
Groceries, mostly. Supplies at real supermarket prices, the outlets, chain restaurants, the harbor's dockside seafood, and departures for fishing charters and sightseeing cruises. It is also where the Park and Ride sits, which makes it the standard staging point for a car-free Boardwalk day during peak season and major events.
The gateway to Assateague
Assateague starts with a drive inland. Route 611 runs south from West Ocean City to the island bridge, roughly twenty to thirty minutes depending on traffic and where you start. Any Assateague day begins by crossing to the mainland, which is the single most common source of confusion when visitors assume the island is walkable from the Inlet.
