What is the White Marlin Open?
The White Marlin Open is the billfish tournament held each August out of the harbor in West Ocean City, one of the largest tournaments of its kind by prize purse. Boats fish offshore all day. They return for public weigh-ins in the late afternoon and evening, and that is the part visitors attend. Admission to watch is free, the crowds are substantial, and the surrounding week fills lodging and restaurants across the island.

Watching the weigh-in
The weigh-in is the show. Boats arrive, fish go up on the scale, and the crowd tracks leaderboard money in real time. Arrive early for a view, expect to stand, and plan for parking that fills quickly. It is a genuinely distinctive Ocean City experience even for people with no interest in fishing.
What the tournament does to the week
Lodging tightens. Harbor restaurants stay busy, and West Ocean City traffic thickens in the late afternoon as spectators converge. If your trip overlaps the tournament and you are not attending, plan meals and errands earlier in the day and keep the harbor area out of your evening route.
Fishing during tournament season
August is offshore season generally, and charter availability tightens around the tournament. If a charter is part of your trip, book well ahead for that week or shift to a bay trip, an inshore trip, or a sightseeing cruise instead.
