What is a guarded beach?
A guarded beach is a stretch of shoreline with an on-duty lifeguard stand and posted or verbally set swimming boundaries. In Ocean City, guarded coverage runs along the developed beach during Beach Patrol's seasonal hours, with stands spaced so that most of the town's swimming area stays under observation. Swimming inside a guarded area means someone is watching for rip currents, drop-offs, and distress. Outside those hours or areas, there is no one to notice, which changes the risk calculation entirely.

How to tell what is guarded right now
Look for an occupied stand, not just a stand. Empty stands stay on the beach outside duty hours and can read as coverage from a distance. If you cannot see a guard sitting on a stand within a reasonable distance in both directions, the water in front of you is unguarded, whatever the sign at the street end says.
Why the boundary matters more than the depth
Guards see what you cannot. A forming rip, a break in the sandbar, a channel running out between bars: all of it decides where they put swimmers. Staying inside the marked area is not about being a strong swimmer. It is about being where someone has already read the water for you and where a rescue can start in seconds rather than minutes.
Planning a day around guarded hours
The best hours are the unguarded ones. Early morning and late afternoon are quieter and cooler, and they sit partly outside the coverage window. The workable compromise is to use those hours for walking, sitting, sandcastles, and photographs, and to put actual swimming in the middle of the day when the stands are staffed.
