What is the Ocean City Beach Patrol?
The Ocean City Beach Patrol is the municipal agency that guards the Atlantic beach. Its surf rescue technicians work from stands spaced along the beach during posted seasonal hours, typically late spring through early fall, and their instructions carry the force of local rule while they are on duty. They set swimming boundaries, close water when conditions warrant, run preventive education, and are the authority visitors should follow over any forecast, app, or opinion about whether the water looks fine.

When the beach is guarded and when it is not
Coverage is seasonal and daily, not continuous. Guards go on duty in the morning and come down in the late afternoon, and the calendar tightens at both ends of the season. Swimming before or after posted hours means swimming unguarded, which is legal and considerably more dangerous. If your group swims, plan the water time inside the guarded window rather than around it.
What the guards are actually doing
Most of the job is prevention. Guards reposition swimmers away from rip currents, call people back from beyond the safe depth, watch for shore break injuries, and reunite lost children. A whistle and a hand signal aimed in your direction is an instruction, not a suggestion. Following it immediately is the single highest-value habit a visitor can bring to the beach.

Directly in front of an occupied stand
Choose it when: You have weak swimmers or young children.

Within sight of a stand
Choose it when: You want space but still want coverage.
Tradeoff: Longer response distance if something goes wrong.
Unguarded stretch or after hours
Choose it when: You are walking, sitting, or watching, not swimming.
Tradeoff: No rescue coverage; treat the water as off-limits.
