When is blue crab season?

Blue crab season is the regulated Maryland harvest window for blue crabs, set annually by the Department of Natural Resources with dates, size limits, and catch rules that change from year to year. For visitors the practical version is simpler: crabs are available in spring and early summer but are at their heaviest and best from roughly midsummer into early fall. Recreational crabbing has its own licensing and gear rules, which differ from commercial harvest and from rules in other states.

Also called: crab season.

Why timing changes the meal

Crabs refill as the season runs. One caught in September generally carries more meat than one caught in May. That is why restaurant pricing moves through the year and why "market price" is genuinely a market price. Asking what is running well today is a reasonable question and usually gets an honest answer.

Catching your own crabs

You can catch your own. Crabbing from a pier, a rented boat, or a bayside dock works with hand lines, collapsible traps, or nets. Maryland sets licensing thresholds, size minimums, and rules about egg-bearing females. Check current DNR rules before you buy gear, and measure everything you keep.

Where crabs fit a trip

A steamed crab dinner takes two hours. Plan it as the evening rather than as a stop on the way to something. Groups that want the flavor without the labor order crab cakes or crab soup instead, which is a completely normal local choice and not a compromise anyone will judge.
