What is a beach wheelchair?

A beach wheelchair is a chair with wide balloon tires that rolls over soft sand where a standard wheelchair sinks. The Town of Ocean City makes beach wheelchairs available to visitors, typically through the Beach Patrol or a designated pickup point, and availability is limited and seasonal. They make the sand reachable for people with mobility limits, but they are pushed by a companion rather than self-propelled, and they are not designed for entering the water.

Also called: beach wheelchairs, surf chair.

How to reserve a beach wheelchair

Call ahead. Contact the Town or Beach Patrol rather than arriving and asking. Supply is finite, demand peaks on the same summer days everyone else wants the beach, and pickup locations and hours are specific. Confirm current procedure, cost if any, and the return deadline before building a day around it.

What a beach wheelchair does not solve

The chair solves the sand. It does not solve the route. Parking distance, the dune crossover, shade, seating, restrooms, and the walk back all remain part of the plan. The Boardwalk itself is a hard, flat surface and is the easiest accessible stretch in town, which makes it a reliable fallback when the sand proves too much.

Accessible options beyond the beach

Access varies widely by venue. The honest planning move is to call the specific place rather than trust a general listing. The Town publishes ADA information as a starting point, and Assateague has its own accessible facilities and boardwalk trails that are worth checking separately.

Planning an accessible beach day

01

Beach wheelchair on the sand

Choose it when: The goal is being on the beach itself.

Tradeoff: Reservation, limited supply, a companion to push.

02

Boardwalk without the sand

Choose it when: You want ocean views with a firm surface.

Tradeoff: Crowds and tram traffic in season.

03

Bayside park or waterfront seating

Choose it when: Comfort and rest points matter most.

Tradeoff: Not the Atlantic beach experience.
