What is the Ocean City Boardwalk?
The Ocean City Boardwalk is the wooden oceanfront promenade that runs from the Inlet at the island's south end north to 27th Street. It carries the amusement piers, the arcades, the food stands, the shops, and the beach access points most visitors picture when they picture Ocean City, and it doubles as the main walking route through downtown. Rides, the tram, and most storefronts run on a seasonal calendar. A February walk and a July evening are different experiences on the same boards.

Where the Boardwalk begins and ends
The south end sits at the Inlet, next to the fishing jetty, the Inlet parking lot, and the oldest amusement blocks in town. Walking north, the attractions thin out and the beach widens, until the boards end in a quieter residential stretch around 27th Street. That gradient matters more than the distance. Want rides, games, noise? Start south. A group that wants a walk, an ocean view, and a coffee should start north and let the crowd density rise slowly.
What changes by time of day
Morning belongs to walkers and cyclists. Bikes are allowed only during posted early hours in season. Midday is beach traffic crossing the boards to and from the sand. Evening is the version people remember: lights, fried food, ride queues, and the slowest walking pace of the day. If your group includes someone who tires quickly or dislikes crowds, the same Boardwalk becomes easy again before ten in the morning.
How the Boardwalk fits a trip plan
Treat it as a corridor, not a destination. It connects the beach, the Inlet, the piers, the museum, and downtown food into one walkable line. Pick a direction. Pick a turnaround point. That works better than driving between individual attractions. The tram covers the full length for a per-ride fare when legs give out.
Choosing where to start your walk
Inlet end, walking north
Choose it when: You want rides, arcades, the museum, and classic food in the first ten minutes.
Tradeoff: The densest crowds and the hardest parking, especially on summer evenings.
Mid-Boardwalk, around 9th to 15th Street
Choose it when: You want a mix of food and beach access without committing to the amusement blocks.
Tradeoff: You will walk to reach either extreme.
North end, walking south
Choose it when: You want a quiet start, a wide beach, and the option to turn back before the crowds.
Tradeoff: The best-known attractions are a long walk away.
