What counts as downtown Ocean City?
Downtown Ocean City is the original resort district at the southern end of the island, running roughly from the Inlet north to the low 30s. It holds the Boardwalk, the amusement piers, the arcades, the named streets from the town's early plat, and most of the walk-up food that visitors associate with a classic Ocean City evening. It is the most walkable district and the most crowded one, which makes it the natural base for a car-light trip and a difficult base for anyone who wants quiet.

Named streets instead of numbers
Downtown skips the numbers. South of 1st Street the streets take their names from Maryland counties and towns: Wicomico, Talbot, Dorchester, Somerset, Caroline, North Division. Directions given by locals switch between the two systems without warning, so it helps to know that a named street means you are near the Boardwalk's southern half and the Inlet is close.
What downtown makes easy
Everything within a short walk: rides, games, museum, beach, fried food, the tram, and the Inlet lot. A family staying downtown can park once and skip driving for two days. That single fact tends to decide the trip. It is also where the Boardwalk is at its most concentrated, so evenings feel like an event whether or not you planned one.
What downtown makes harder
Quiet, parking, and space. Buildings sit close together, streets are short, and summer nights carry sound. Larger groups, dog owners, and anyone traveling with a napping child usually do better in midtown or uptown, then visit downtown deliberately in the evening. Consider whether you want the Boardwalk outside your door or twenty minutes away.
