When is greenhead fly season?
Greenhead fly season is the midsummer stretch, typically July into August, when biting salt-marsh flies are active along the Maryland coast. The females bite hard enough to end a beach session, and they concentrate near marsh, which makes Assateague and the bayside noticeably worse than the ocean-facing Ocean City beach. They are worst on hot, humid, low-wind days and largely absent when a steady sea breeze is blowing. Repellent helps somewhat; wind and location help more.

Why Assateague gets the worst of it
Blame the marsh. The island is bordered by it, and salt marsh is where these flies breed. On a still July afternoon, the same stretch of Assateague beach that felt idyllic in June can become unusable within minutes. Rangers and regular visitors watch wind direction closely, and the standard local advice is to go early, go on a breezy day, or go in September.
What actually keeps greenheads off you
Wind is the best defense, so a spot near the water with an onshore breeze beats a sheltered dune hollow. Covering up helps, since they bite exposed skin, particularly ankles and legs. Repellents vary in effectiveness against them. Retreating to the car for twenty minutes and returning when the breeze picks up is often more effective than any product.
Planning around the worst weeks
Stuck with mid-July? Go at first light and keep an Ocean City backup ready. If your trip is flexible, put the island in June or September and use midsummer for the guarded municipal beach, where the flies are far less of a factor.
