What is the Coastal Highway Beach Bus?

The Coastal Highway Beach Bus is the Town of Ocean City's public bus, running the length of the island along Coastal Highway with stops every few blocks in both directions. It is normally sold as a ride-all-day fare rather than per trip, and service runs late into the night during the summer season. For most visitors it is the practical alternative to moving a car between districts, and it is the backbone of any car-free or designated-driver plan.

Also called: Beach Bus, the bus.

How riding it actually works

Stops run along both sides of Coastal Highway. Your direction of travel decides which side you wait on. Buses come frequently in season and less so outside it. Boarding takes longer in July than the schedule suggests, and the last buses of the night are the busiest. Confirm current fares, payment methods, and hours with the Town before the trip.

Where it saves the most time

Downtown at night. Driving to the Boardwalk on a Saturday in July and finding parking can take longer than the bus ride from 90th Street. It also solves the alcohol problem cleanly for adult groups, and it lets a family split up, with one group heading back early while the rest stay.

What the Beach Bus does not cover

The bus runs the island, not the mainland. Getting to West Ocean City, the outlets, or Assateague still takes a car or a rideshare. The Boardwalk itself is served by the tram, not the bus. Plan those legs separately rather than assuming one fare covers everything.
